A master of public health (MPH) degree prepares you for the real-world practice of public health in six different areas: biostatistics, epidemiology, health services administration, health education, behavioral science, and environmental science. With this type of degree, students usually have a greater concentration on the application of theory within the medical world, rather than on research or education. Your MPH degree can help you have a career in promoting health through changes in society and culture.
In addition to the six areas listed above, many public health programs allow you to also study in sub-areas such as urban planning or social work. At the end of the day, though, all public health workers are prepared for one of two types of work: preventative medicine or population control and study. By getting a master’s degree in your field, you’ll qualify for advanced-level positions no matter where you work, while with just a bachelor’s degree, you may find it hard to move into a management or administrative position (see degrees suited for management and administration).
Another choice that opens to you once you get your MPH degree is to continue you education. The MPH is not a terminal degree; you can also move on to get your doctor of public health. This advanced doctorate degree focuses on learning problem-solving skills to help you make a difference when faced with extremely difficult public health problems.
With an MPH, whether you go on to get your doctorate or not, you’ll be qualified to work at hospitals, private health organizations, consulting firms, public health facilities, government departments, and more. Many degree holders also go on to open their own businesses in this field.
