If you want to work in public health, but are looking for an alternative to the master of public health degree, some of your options are a masters of health science and a master of health administration (MHA) in health science. Both of these degrees allow you to specialize more than you would be able to with a general master of public health degree.
When pursuing a master’s degree in health science, you can choose one of two educational paths. The first path, an academic concentration, prepares you for a career in health research. On the other hand, with a professional concentration, you’ll be ready for a more hands-on public health career. In either case, you can further specialize with a concentration in any one of the many health science fields available, such as mental health, immunology, clinical procedures, nursing, risk management, or international health and policy. The more you specialize, the more qualified you’ll be for specific positions in that field.
Health science is a vast field, and by getting a master’s degree, you’ll put yourself at the head of the pack when applying for a job, regardless of your concentration. Students who earn masters in health science degrees or master of administration in health science degrees go on to work in supervisory or management positions at biomedical companies, clinical research programs, hospitals and private practices, health-related manufacturing companies, government health departments, and more. You can also consider opening your own health consulting firm or going on to get a doctorate degree in the health science field. This is an extremely flexible degree, so it is perfect for students who want to qualify for better jobs, but who aren’t 100% sure of their ultimate career goals.
