If you’re interested in an advanced degree in the health care administration field, one of your degree options is the master of science in management (MSM) with a concentration in health care administration. (See also the Master of Management (MM) degree options.) This degree is similar to an MBA in health care administration degree, but it allows for students to study the field of health care in relations to management more closely, research specific problems in this field. It is more focused on theory, and thus, students don’t have to have work experience that is generally required to enter an MBA degree program.
An MSM in health care administration, however, allows you a bit more flexibility than if you get your master of public health or master of health administration. With a master of science in management, you’ll focus on your concentration, but your main education will still be in general management. This opens a number of career doors to you when searching for a job.
Getting your MSM is a great choice if you want to enter a PhD program in the future, rather than getting a doctorate in business administration or other kind of advanced degree. You can also find a number of health care job openings for those with a management-based education, including supervisory roles in research facilities, as well as research and teaching jobs in the medical world. One thing is certain: no matter what career path you choose, getting a master’s degree in this field will lead to better jobs with more responsibilities and higher salaries.
