If you get a master of arts (MA) degree in organizational management, most colleges will give you the option to specialize in one area. By choosing a concentration in healthcare, you’re preparing for a great career in the administration of a healthcare facility, such as a hospital department, healthcare consulting firm, nursing home, research company, or clinic.

The courses you’ll take as part of an MA in organizational management with a concentration in healthcare will depend on your school, but some of the skills you can expect to learn include leadership tactics, management techniques, team building, strategic planning, marketing, public relations, and finance. In addition, in your final months of study, you’ll take courses that are specific to those who want to work in the healthcare field. During the rest of the time, you may be grouped together with students interested in other concentrations.

The advantage to this kind of degree over a general organization management degree or MBA is that you do get training in your field during some of the study. However, in opposition to a very specialized degree, such as a Masters of Public Health (MPH) or Masters of Health Administration (MHA), with an MA in organizational management, you’ll also keep your options open when it comes to finding a job, as you’ll be qualified to work in industries other than health care too. It also leaves you open to getting a doctorate degree in any number of management or administrative fields. If you want to work in healthcare, though, make sure that you find a program that offers this concentration option, which will set you apart from other candidates who may have more general degrees.
